iFlytek chair delivers confident speech to employees despite projected net profit fall of over 70% for 2023

Chair of iFlytek Liu Qingfeng told employees that the Chinese voice-recognition company has “resisted the extreme pressure from the US” and is entering “a new period of strategic opportunity,” at his firm’s annual general meeting. Speaking on Tuesday, Liu again benchmarked iFlytek’s upgraded Spark against GPT-4 Turbo, saying it expects to be as powerful as OpenAI’s most advanced model in the first half of 2024.

Why it matters: Liu’s confident tone throughout his speech is being seen as a sign that the company seems to have passed its dark days in the grip of US sanctions due to its “seizing of the strategic opportunity of large language models.”

NIO Capital raises new RMB 3 billion fund despite cooling VC climate

NIO Capital, a venture capital firm founded by Willliam Li, chief executive of the namesake electric vehicle maker, has raised a new China-focused fund of more than RMB 3 billion ($416.8 million), despite a global market lull and domestic economic challenges.

Why it matters: The fundraising milestone will allow NIO Capital to further explore the “transformative potential of innovative technologies in the automotive and energy sectors,” said Ian Zhu, a managing partner at NIO Capital, in a Monday announcement.

Nvidia’s tailored-for-China H20 AI chip now available for pre-orders, set for competition with Huawei: report

Nvidia is making a strategic return to the Chinese market by introducing its China-specific H20 AI chip, a move that comes after US policies affected the company’s sales in China. Nvidia has begun taking pre-orders from distributors for its H20 AI chips, priced almost on par with Huawei’s Ascend 910B, according to Reuters.

Why it matters: To address challenges posed by the US’s bans on the sale of certain GPUs (Graphics Processing Units) to China, Nvidia has launched cut-down variants compliant with American export policies. Amid concerns about potential limitations on accessing Nvidia’s products, Huawei’s chip is widely acknowledged as the leading alternative AI offering in China.

The performance marks a strong comeback for Huawei, as the company has experienced a consistent decline in market share since US sanctions were introduced in 2019. The report attributes this achievement primarily to Huawei’s new flagship Mate 60 series, featuring the self developed Kirin 9000S chip. Specifically, the company’s 8-megapixel image sensors for advanced safety features nearly doubled in revenue year-over-year, as highlighted by Chief Executive Hassane El-Khoury during an earnings call. The revenue surge is also attributed to the increasing demand for its silicon carbide chips, with business revenue witnessing “the highest growth in the industry,” reaching over $800 million, approximately four times higher than a year ago, El-Khoury added. Silicon carbide (SiC) power modules, featured in the company’s chips, can operate at much higher voltages than traditional silicon-based ones, enabling faster recharging and longer driving ranges for electric vehicles. Parts suppliers like Bosch and Infineon have been expanding their capacities to meet the surging demand. [onsemi release]
